Mouth Guards: An Athlete’s Best Friend

August 8, 2008/in Comprehensive Dentistry, Health/by admin

The intensity of such sports as football, hockey, and lacrosse can bring a level of danger to one’s teeth. Wearing an ADA approved mouth guard can be very beneficial for protecting a person’s mouth while playing in these dangerous sports.

According to the American Dental Association, mouth guards, which typically cover the top portion of the teeth, can cushion a blow to a person’s face minimizing the risk for broken, or chipped teeth and can also protect against injuries to the soft tissues inside of the mouth. It’s important however that the athlete makes sure that the mouth guard fits properly inside of the mouth in order to ensure full protection. There are three main types of sport mouth guards. The first is known as a stock guard, which generally is inexpensive and come pre-formed, ready to wear. The problem with this kind of mouth guard is that they can be bulky and may cause the person difficulties with breathing and talking. The second type of mouth guard is known as boil and bite. These mouth guards are supposed to be boiled in water first and then placed in the mouth in order to take the shape of the person’s teeth. The problem with this type of guard is that if the directions aren’t followed properly, you may wind up with a badly fitted mouth guard. The third and final type of mouth guard is known as the custom-fitted guard. These are actually molded by your dentist professionally and although they can be a bit more expensive, they offer a better fit for a higher chance of protection.

If you are someone who plays a number of sports, wearing a mouth guard can be very beneficial to protecting the integrity of your mouth. Don’t let the winning goal put you at risk for eventual dental problems. Protect your mouth by using a mouth guard, and you’re sure to have a winning smile in the end.
