A Proper Dental Defense

August 11, 2008/in Comprehensive Dentistry, Health/by admin

A common misconception among many people is that brushing is a strong enough defense against oral health issues. Let’s look at the mouth in terms of a football game. The opposing team which in this case are considered to be food particles and hygiene problems such as gingivitis and halitosis are trying to do their best to take over and dominate the field (i.e. your mouth). In order to prevent them from doing this, you are responsible for providing a strong and solid defense system. Solely brushing your teeth will not provide an overall protection system from these harmful diseases.

Did you know that those small bits and pieces of food you eat that get lodged in between the teeth begin to deteriorate in just a few hours after consumption? This is one of the major reasons someone may experience bouts of bad breath. So it’s important to rid your mouth of these food particles as soon as possible and defend your mouth against the dangers of plaque build up, and that is where floss comes in. Whether you were born with the perfect smile, or you’ve invested in cosmetic procedures such as veneers or teeth whitening, it’s completely in your control to maintain that beautiful smile. By flossing immediately after a meal, the bacterium that forms plaque doesn’t have enough time to actually congregate thus leaving your mouth in its healthy state.

What many people may not know is that the mouth is home to over 700 types of germs, making it a perfect haven for diseases to appear and multiply. Without the proper dental care, these germs can ultimately cause an array of health problems including infections within the teeth, gum disease, which can lead to more serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke, and also the loss of teeth altogether. Although some of these problems may be caused by genetic disposition, brushing your teeth twice a day at least, and flossing after each and every meal can help protect against them.

Oral health is pertinent not only to a person’s physical well being, but also to their emotional confidence as well. So it’s important to take care of your teeth in the best way possible which includes brushing and flossing and seeing your dentist at least once a year for an in depth cleaning. After all, having a beautiful smile may get you that first down in football, but maintaining your oral health will ultimately give you the touchdown and win you the game.
